OCG vs. TCG – the Yu-Gi-Oh! difference explained simply
OCG, TCG – if you're into Yu-Gi-Oh!, you run into these abbreviations all the time. Here we explain the difference in a simple, practical way.
What is OCG?
OCG stands for Official Card Game – the original, Japanese version of Yu-Gi-Oh!. It is published by Konami in Japan and played mainly in Asia (Japan, Korea, China and other countries). The cards are released in Japanese as well as in Korean and Chinese editions.
If you've ever seen Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh! card sleeves or playmats with artwork you can't find in Europe – those are OCG products.
What is TCG?
TCG stands for Trading Card Game – the international version for Europe, North America, Oceania and Latin America, distributed by Konami Europe and Konami of America. The cards are available in German, English, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, among others.
The gameplay rules are largely the same. Still, the two formats differ in ways that matter a lot to tournament players and collectors.

The key differences in detail
Card pool & banlist
The OCG and the TCG run on separate banlists. Cards that are legal in one format can be forbidden or limited in the other – so a deck can't always be carried over one to one.
Releases
New booster sets and products are usually released in Japan several months before their TCG counterparts. That makes the OCG a preview of what's coming to the West.
Tournaments
Japan has its own tournament circuit, including the YCSJ (Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series Japan) – prestigious tournaments with exclusive participant-only sets that can't be bought in stores. More on this in our article What is YCSJ?.
Card sleeves & accessories
Konami Japan produces exclusive OCG card sleeves, playmats and deck boxes that are never officially released in the TCG market. They are among the most sought-after accessories in the hobby.
Are the cards the same size?
Yes. OCG and TCG cards are exactly the same size (59 × 86 mm) and both need sleeves in Japan / Small Size (62 × 89 mm). That makes them slightly smaller than Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon TCG cards, which use the larger standard size (63 × 88 mm).
So OCG sleeves and deck boxes fit TCG cards just as well, and vice versa – you can use either with your collection. More on this in our guide to Japan Size sleeves.
Can I play OCG and TCG cards together?
The card backs differ slightly. In official Konami TCG tournaments all OCG products are forbidden – OCG cards may not be played there.
It's different for unofficial formats such as Edison and Goat: in Europe these are mostly organised by the community or privately and are not sanctioned by Konami. That's why many of these tournaments allow OCG cards under certain conditions – for example as long as the card is legal in the format and clearly identifiable. The exact rules are set by the organiser, so it's best to ask the tournament organiser beforehand.
For casual games at home you can mix OCG and TCG cards without any problem anyway, as long as you use opaque sleeves.
Why do players in Europe buy OCG products?
Many European players – whether they play OCG, TCG or both – specifically look for OCG accessories for a simple reason: the designs are far more varied and exclusive. Konami Japan regularly releases character-art sleeves, tournament playmats and limited deck boxes featuring popular monsters like Dark Magician, Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Sky Striker Ace Raye, Diabellstar and many more – with artwork that never appears on TCG products.
These items are produced in limited quantities, distributed only in Japan (and sometimes only at events) and are practically impossible to find in European retail. That's where Jungcards comes in: we import directly from Japan, check every item and ship quickly from Germany.
Which OCG products does Jungcards carry?
